Administration
Ms. Christina Herrera, Principal
Hello Kate Waller Barrett Friends & Family,
I am honored to join Kate Waller Barrett Elementary as your new principal! I am excited to be part of this incredible school community and look forward to working alongside our dedicated staff, supportive families, and amazing students to continue fostering a positive and engaging learning environment.
I began my career in education as a teacher in Stafford County, where I spent two years in the classroom before transitioning to a classroom teacher for five years in Prince William County. Shortly after, I transitioned into administration as an assistant principal, focusing on student success, family engagement, and innovative strategies to improve academic outcomes. One of my proudest accomplishments was forming a school attendance team that helped reduce chronic absenteeism by 9% in just one year. I am passionate about ensuring that every student feels supported, valued, and empowered to reach their full potential.
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Master of Arts in Teaching from Christopher Newport University, followed by a Master of Education in Educational Leadership from George Mason University.
At Barrett, we believe that education is a partnership, and I look forward to working with families and the community to create a learning experience that challenges, inspires, and supports every child. Please know that my door is always open—I welcome your thoughts, ideas, and collaboration as we embark on this journey together.
Thank you for welcoming me into the Barrett family. I am eager to begin this school year and to celebrate the growth and success of our students together!
On the good days, the tough days, and every day in between: we see you, we hear you, we love you.
Warm Regards,
Christina Herrera
Mr. Lyle Salyars, Assistant Principal
I am honored to join the Kate Waller Barrett Elementary School community as your new Assistant Principal. Over the past two years, I have served as a School Improvement Specialist at H.H. Poole Middle School, where I focused on using data to identify achievement gaps, support school improvement planning, and implement targeted interventions to help all students succeed. My passion for education is rooted in the belief that every child deserves a safe, supportive, and engaging learning environment.
Before joining Stafford County Public Schools, I worked as a special education teacher and proudly served as a non-commissioned officer in the United States military. These experiences have shaped my commitment to service, teamwork, and continuous growth—values I carry with me into every role.
I earned both my Bachelor and Master of Business Administration degrees from the University of Maryland University College, and I am currently pursuing a doctorate in Educational Leadership from Liberty University. I’m excited to partner with our amazing staff, students, and families to build on the strong foundation at Barrett and help every Hawk soar to new heights.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out—I’m looking forward to a great year ahead!
